Explore the world of the Dolomites

Walking, hiking, climbing and other ways to discover Alta Badia and the Dolomites

Searching for treasures is always fascinating and the Dolomites are full of fabulous hidden gems: forests and meadows, waterfalls and brooks, pastures and mountain dairies, grottos and lakes and, of course, the imposing rocky peaks, incomparable in their majestic beauty.

To explore this enchanting world everyone can choose the way that best suits his or her requirements, preferences and abilities. Only within Alta Badia you will find more than 400 km of hiking paths: from wide and easy ones, ideal for a pleasant walk with a stroller, to steep and narrow ones that lead up high in the world of the most breath-taking views. The panoramic plateaus of the Sella Group (accessible both by foot and mountain lifts) are perfect for Nordic walking and jogging, savouring the heady scents of Alpine flowers and fresh hay. At the same time the Nature Parks Puez-Geisler and Fanes-Sennes-Prags are the best place not only to discover the marvels of the nature, but also rediscover yourselves. The solemn silence of the mountains is broken only by the twitter of birds, by the melodious murmur of streams and by the bells of cows on the pasture. What can be better to regain the internal harmony and the spiritual balance?!

But the summer offer of Alta Badia isn’t only limited to hiking through the Dolomites and walking in the mountains. With the project “Explore your way” you’ll be spoilt for choice among the varied activities like geocaching, orienteering, trekking, trail running, speedhiking, etc. And for those who want to go further, there is a rich variety of climbing itineraries and fixed rope routes on the stunning natural faces, considered among the most beautiful in the world. And those who can never get enough of adrenaline, can try the unique emotion of exploring the Dolomites from above through paragliding, hang gliding, slackline and base jumping.

Explore Alta Badia on 2 wheels

Eden for road bikes, E-bikes and MTB

As soon as the warm spring sun melts down the last traces of snow, Alta Badia becomes a magnet for cyclists. Curvy roads that wind through the picturesque Alpine villages, tempting to follow them towards the legendary passes of the Dolomites, arouse the desire to pedal recompensing for every effort with splendid views.

To excite further enthusiasm of the passionate cyclists, Alta Badia and the neighbouring valleys host every year numerous sporting events. Among the best known ones, there are, for example, Sellaronda Bike Days, the days when the famous “Tour of the 4 passes” around the Sella Group is closed for traffic and exclusively reserved for cyclists. But the queen of the cycling season is undoubtedly the famous Marathon of the Dolomites (Maratona dles Dolomites), an amateur contest with international fame. The Marathon offers 3 itineraries, that vary in length and difficulty, across Val Badia, Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Livinallongo, Colle Santa Lucia, Selva di Cadore and Cortina d’Ampezzo, but with the start and finish line always in Alta Badia. Try as well to compete among 9000 participants on the extremely beautiful but highly challenging trails, where everyone is, first of all, in competition with himself.

Neither mountain bikers who prefer wild trails to paved roads suffer from the lack of choice in the Dolomites. In Alta Badia you will enjoy a rich variety of MTB tracks and routes that are easily accessible thanks to bike-friendly public transport and mountain lifts. Beginners can improve their technique on relatively easy tracks while advanced riders can challenge themselves alone or with a specialized guide on the trails of any difficulty level suitable for every MTB discipline: from downhill to freeride, from touring to enduro.

Those who wish to enjoy pedalling across the mountains without much effort, can hire an electric bike. Thanks to the E-Bike Sharing project and to a wide network of charging stations the use of E-MTB in San Cassiano in Alta Badia is easy and available for everyone.

Alta Badia for families

Activities and entertainment for every age

With mummy and dad up into the mountains! Finally! Quickly pack the rucksack, take a mountain lift and then off… to explore such a different world – across flowered meadows towards a dairy farm for a glass of fresh milk and then hide-and-seek with cows trying to find them by the sound of their bells… but wait, who is that?.. Mummy, look, a deer!!! And over there, in the tree – a squirrel!!! Sounds like a dream for every kid, doesn’t it? San Cassiano and Alta Badia, however, offer much more to leave your children open-mouthed and yearning for the next adventure in the Dolomites.

For the smallest ones every village has public playgrounds, while on top, at the altitude of 2000 m, you will find the magnificent Movimënt parks, full of entertainment for the whole family: fitness and relaxation areas, lakes with water games, mini golf, slides, adventure trails and on Piz Sorega even a bear’s cave! All Movimënt parks are well connected by panoramic paths easily passable for strollers and bikes or e-bikes (each park has a rental point). And to recover some energy, drop in at one of the numerous Alpine huts that serve delicious traditional meals and mouth-watering desserts.

Neither in the valley there is a lack of attractions. Come to meet the farm animals in the Animal Park in Colfosco! Or do you prefer watching deer and roe deer in the Deer Park Paraciora between La Villa and Badia? The most active ones can try their agility in the Adventure Park with 5 treetop trails of different difficulty levels or exercise on one of the climbing and boulder walls. Otherwise, come to the equestrian arena to train your horse-riding skills.

To complete the perfect summer mountain holiday for families in San Cassiano, take advantage of the cultural program that includes excursions along the routes of ancient legends, festivities and traditional processions, two museums dedicated to the story and culture of the ancient Ladin land and a literature festival for children “The book in the rock” (Il Libro nella Roccia) with various creative workshops.
